I am Dr. Monica A. White, a writer, educator, mom, and owner of Grand Pearl Communications. I deliver writing and communication services to individuals and businesses who want to step up their image and reach new goals.
That’s the quickie, but here’s a brief story so you can get to know me.
My freshman year of college, my mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas and I said, “A dictionary and thesaurus desk set—the big, hardcover kind.” My friends and I have laughed for years at that. They couldn’t believe I wasted a gift wish on that request. Truth be told, almost immediately after I said it, I couldn’t believe it either. To their point—my parents definitely would have just purchased it for me just because. Instead it was my highly anticipated Christmas 1988 gift. I know my mom was like: Bet! You got it, sis.
In my professional career as an educator, researcher, and leadership consultant, I’ve honed the skill of making polished presentation and language an essential part of your look. I love words and have always marveled at how things change with the right words, in the right order, with the right intonation. What power!
I heard activist and actress Ruby Dee speak at a Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Holiday luncheon while in my 20’s and she opened by saying, “I am a word monger…”. I don’t remember what came next because I was so excited sitting there in awe thinking, “me too, Ruby!” I loved the crude, yet completeness of the description of us—me and Ruby Dee, united in word mongering, using words to influence outcomes, push ideas. Holding whatever she is selling, I am buying court.
I have taken my love of language and desire to help others tell their stories and developed Grand Pearl Communications—a writing and communications firm assisting individuals, businesses, and organizations to get their print, digital, verbal messaging game “all the way together.”
A stylist is one who helps make the best you shine without feeling fake or made over. I chose the moniker Word Stylist to describe my work as I consult with each of my clients to outfit them with the right words to reach their goals—whatever they may be. The end result is one where clients are comfortable, take some risks when needed to be on the cutting-edge, and, most importantly, excel!
